Compliance solutions for fire‑resistance

We provide training, advisory, testing, verification, inspection and certification services for the fire resistance industry to help you deliver compliant products, systems and assemblies that support safer, code‑conforming buildings. Fire‑rated wall, floor and ceiling assemblies are assessed for their ability to create compartmentation and help limit the spread of fire and smoke. Our third‑party certification evaluates safety and performance so you can demonstrate compliance with building codes.

Standards and ratings

We test to internationally recognized methods and environmental sustainability requirements, including UL 263/ASTM E119 and BS 476, to establish the hourly rating that Code Authorities rely on as proof of compliance.

How we help you reach the market

Demonstrate market readiness with the UL Certification Mark and region‑specific options such as c‑UL and UL‑EU, alongside Evaluation Reports that provide added assurance to code authorities.

Sustainability validations

Support specification decisions with GREENGUARD Certification, Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) and Environmental Claims Validation (ECV) to address environmental requirements for building materials.

Fire Resistance Certification, Testing and Advisory Services

UL Solutions provides fire-resistance certification, testing, modeling, and advisory services to help products, systems, and designs meet global fire-safety and building-code requirements.

Fire Resistance Certification Services

Our third‑party certification services help demonstrate regulatory compliance and market acceptance for fire‑resistant products and assemblies.

Services include:

  • UL Mark, C‑UL Mark, and UL‑EU Mark Certification
  • EU CE Marking (Technical Documentation File)
  • Brazil INMETRO Certification
  • Certificate of Compliance (Middle East)
  • MEA Reports and Florida Validation Services
  • Multiple Listing Services and Field Evaluations
  • Evaluation Reports (ER)

Environmental Sustainability Validation

We help verify products meet environmental and emissions requirements for healthier buildings.

Services include:

  • GREENGUARD Certification
  • Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)

Testing, Modeling & Engineering Services

We assess fire performance against UL and industry standards to support code‑compliant designs.

Capabilities include:

  • Fire resistance ratings (UL 263 / ASTM E119 / BS 476)
  • Smoke leakage testing
  • Engineering evaluation and technical support

UL 263 Modeling and Simulation for Gypsum Board

Model-based performance screening simulates the thermal behavior of gypsum board under UL 263/ASTM E119 fire exposure, using validated material properties and boundary conditions. The service provides comparative temperature and time-to-failure estimates to help identify the strongest design candidates—reducing reliance on costly, iterative full-scale fire tests prior to system-level certification.

Advisory and Building Envelope Services

We help ensure fire‑resistant assemblies perform as intended through:

  • Building envelope forensic services
  • Building envelope commissioning

Find UL fire‑rated assemblies

Search walls, floors and ceilings in Product iQ

Use Product iQ® to locate UL fire rated assemblies across walls, partitions, floor‑ceiling and roof‑ceiling constructions, as well as beams and columns. Product iQ supports searches by assembly or design number, category, keywords and more. Firestopping, joints and perimeter fire barriers

Our Firestopping, Joint Protection and Perimeter Fire Containment Testing service certifies systems designed to help limit flame and smoke spread through penetrations and joints in ul wall assemblies and other rated constructions, with systems searchable in Product iQ.  Explore firestopping services

Structural steel fire protection

For projects requiring protection of structural steel, we test and certify to UL 263 for cellulosic fire scenarios and to UL 1709 for hydrocarbon exposure in petrochemical applications, with optional environmental durability per UL 2431. See structural steel services

Exterior wall exposure guidance

When exterior walls must be rated for fire approaching from outside, Product iQ can help you identify designs evaluated for exterior‑face exposure. See UL’s expert Q&A on locating these assemblies and the conditions of their use.  Read the Q&A

Frequently asked questions

For fire resistance rating, we test assemblies to recognized standards including UL 263 / ASTM E119 and BS 476. These methods are used to establish an hourly fire resistance rating that can be used as evidence of compliance to code requirements.

We commonly work with fire-rated wall, floor and ceiling assemblies that act as fire and smoke barriers to support compartmentation in buildings. We also support testing and certification needs tied to fire-resistance-rated designs used for code-compliant installations where building codes require hourly ratings.

We do both. Along with testing, UL Solutions provides third-party certification to help demonstrate that products, systems and assemblies meet regulatory and market requirements, and we also offer verification, inspection and advisory support as part of the broader service offering.

Because it is a widely recognized way to show that a product, system or assembly meets the regulatory and market requirements it was evaluated against. Code enforcement officials and buyers use the presence of the UL Certification Mark as a confidence signal when reviewing fire resistant products, systems and assemblies.

A UL Evaluation Report is positioned as an additional differentiator that can give code authorities added assurance that assemblies have been evaluated to the diverse code requirements they need to meet. It can matter when a project team or authority wants more documented clarity beyond a mark alone.

Yes. UL Solutions offers multiple certification service options, including UL Mark Certification, c-UL Mark Certification, and UL-EU Mark Certification, and lists additional region- and scheme-specific services (for example, EU CE Marking Technical Documentation File Service, Brazil INMETRO, and Middle East Certificate of Compliance).

We support customers with services that extend beyond testing, including advisory work and building envelope services. That includes offerings such as Building Envelope Commissioning Services and Building Envelope Forensic Services to help building owners gain confidence that exterior wall assemblies will perform as expected.

Fire-resistance ratings are tied to assemblies being built and maintained in line with the published design and installation criteria. If key construction details change, the assembly may no longer perform as expected for the intended hourly rating, which is why UL Solutions guidance emphasizes following design and installation specifications.

Look for designs that explicitly state language such as “Rating Exposed to Fire on Exterior Face,” “Rating Exposed to Fire on Either Face,” or equivalent wording. When exterior-face exposure is part of the rating, the design will also identify the construction items required to achieve that performance under exterior exposure conditions.

Yes. In addition to fire resistance rating testing, UL Solutions lists Smoke Leakage Testing as part of its testing services in this area.

Yes. Alongside fire resistance services, UL Solutions lists environmental sustainability validation options such as GREENGUARD Certification, Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) and Environmental Claims Validation (ECV) to support environmental requirements that may be part of specification decisions.
