On July 10, 2024, a Cabinet Decision designating perfluoro alkanoic acid (PFOA) isomers, salts, and related compounds as Class I Specified Chemical Substances was published in the Kanpou, Japan’s Official Gazette. These amendments come in the wake of the decision at the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention to designate these substances under the scope of elimination.
The implementation shall be as follows:

Designation of PFOA related compounds (perfluorooctyl iodide, 8:2 fluorotelomer alcohol, and compounds designated by MHLW/METI/ME Ordinance) as Class I Specified Chemical Substances | January 10, 2025 |
Prohibit the import of the following products containing PFOA-related compounds:

Prohibit the use of the following substances other than two essential uses:

For the time being, the substances may be used in fire extinguishers and fire extinguishing agents if they comply with relevant technical standards.
