First-Ever Certification Issued for 2000 VDC PV Module

Jinko Solar’s Tiger Neo series photovoltaic module earned certification to UL 61730-1 and UL 61730-2.

Jinko Solar earned the first-ever UL certification for models rated at 2,000 Volts DC

June 11, 2024

In March 2024, UL Solutions issued a certification for Jinko Solar’s 2,000 VDC PV module. This is the world’s first safety certification earned for UL 61730-1 and UL 61730-2 and represents a significant achievement in photovoltaic (PV) technology.

To support growing needs in energy transition and electrification, manufacturers around the world are developing new technologies to harness sustainable energy and store it safely. PV technology has evolved steadily from 600V to 1,500V and now to 2,000V. This trend will likely continue to drive future energy efficiency and reduce installation and system costs.

Jinko Solar, based in Shanghai, China, recently developed a photovoltaic (PV) module rated at 2,000 volts DC (VDC). This product, an 182mm size N type TOPCON module from the company’s Tiger Neo series, is subject to more stringent safety and performance requirements than products rated for 1,500V to protect installers, operators and property.

Stringent testing for large-scale PVs

PV modules rated for a system voltage of 2,000 VDC are covered under several UL Standards:

  • UL 61730-1, the Standard for Photovoltaic (PV) Module Safety Qualification - Part 1: Requirements for Construction
  • UL 61730-2, the Standard for Photovoltaic (PV) Module Safety Qualification - Part 2: Requirements for Testing

The requirements for modules rated for a system voltage of 2,000 VDC were published in February 2024.

These 2,000 VDC applications must meet more stringent requirements relative to traditional 1,500 VDC-rated modules to mitigate risks such as:

  • Electric breakdown
  • Electric leakage
  • Electric arc
  • Electric shock
  • Fire

Modules rated for higher system voltages require more than a simple upgrade — a full redesign of the module structure and adoption of new materials and components is required.

Jinko Solar’s Tiger Neo module was developed with increased electric creepage and clearance distances, new insulation layers and components to ensure that the restructured design is accepted globally for safe operation at higher voltages.
