Labeling: USA - Utah Releases Notice of Exemption for Slippers

In June, the Department of Agriculture and Food of Utah announced some updates on labeling for slippers containing filling. Learn what changes for your softline business.

Slippers on the floor

August 23, 2024

Effective immediately from June 26, 2024, the Department of Agriculture and Food of Utah has announced that slippers containing filling material in the top portion are exempt from listing the filling material in the bottom portion.

Previously, regulations required that any filling material used in both the top and bottom portions of slippers be explicitly listed on the textile label.

This notice is intended to streamline the compliance process and reduce the labeling burden on manufacturers, while still ensuring transparency and consumer safety.

All other labeling requirements remain unchanged. Manufacturers must ensure that the filling material in the top portion is accurately listed on the textile label.

Key updates

Effective immediately, slippers that contain filling material in the top portion are exempt from listing the filling material in the bottom portion.

After a thorough review and considering industry feedback, the authority has determined that if the filling material in the top portion of the slippers is clearly labeled, it is not necessary to list the filling material in the bottom portion on the textile label.

Please note the following key points regarding this exemption:

  1. Effective Date: The exemption is effective, June 26, 2024.
  2. Scope: This applies solely to slippers with filling material in the top portion. The bottom portion of such slippers is exempt from listing the filling material on the textile label.
  3. Compliance: All other labeling requirements remain unchanged. Manufacturers must ensure that the filling material in the top portion is accurately listed on the textile label.
  4. Enforcement: This exemption will be monitored to ensure compliance, and any non-compliant products may be subject to regulatory action.

Softline manufacturers, brands and retailers must adapt to this regulatory update to continue to sell compliant articles on the Utah market.
