Since joining UL Solutions in 1998, Travis Hardin has contributed significantly to advancing its safer building products and systems engineering services. Now serving as Principal Engineering director, he oversees a global team of principal engineering experts, supporting innovation and safety across key sectors such as appliances, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, drinking water, food service sanitation and controls. Alongside his leadership responsibilities, Travis provides technical direction as the principal engineer for water heaters and boilers, acting as a trusted adviser to customers, regulatory bodies and industry organizations worldwide.
Bridging the gap between safety and sustainable technologies
Travis empowers industries with evolving needs by aligning safety with sustainability. He and his team help guide the global shift from high-impact chemicals to the safe adoption of more sustainable, low-global-warming-potential (GWP) refrigerants. They also address emerging issues in clean energy, including integrating hydrogen into natural gas systems and developing safe practices for reducing carbon emissions without compromising performance or reliability. As experts contributing to the worldwide conversation on the transition to low-GWP refrigerants and blending hydrogen with natural gas, Travis and his team are helping shape evolving regulatory frameworks and safety standards to meet the challenges of these new sustainable technologies and processes.
Advancing global safety through standards leadership
Travis has made significant contributions to safety and standards development, with notable achievements including his involvement in proposing the first edition of UL 295, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard for Commercial-Industrial Gas Burners. He helps shape the work of code and standards technical committees at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), contributing to the development of global construction, testing, marking and instruction requirements. Travis provides strategic guidance to his international team of engineers, supporting consistent, high-quality technical and advisory services. His dedication to clear communications, collaboration and technical excellence helps drive progress in safety standards and strengthens UL Solutions’ impact worldwide.
“The work we do helps industries transition to cleaner energy sources and safer systems, proving that safety and sustainability can go hand in hand.” –Travis Hardin
