The State of Rhode Island has introduced the Genetically Engineered Raw and Packaged Food Labeling Act, requiring labeling on all raw and packaged food that is entirely and partially produced through genetic engineering.
The bill stipulates that, beginning January 1, 2016, the following labeling rules would apply:
- For packaged food, manufacturers should put the words "genetically engineered" clearly and conspicuously on the front or back of the package of such commodity.
- For packaged food containing some products of genetic engineering, manufacturers should include on the label of the product in clear and conspicuous language on the front and back of the package the words "produced with genetic engineering" or "partially produced with genetic engineering."
