NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS — May 30, 2023 — UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science, today announced its laboratory in Taipei, Taiwan, was named a Bureau of Standards Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) voluntary product certification (VPC) designated testing laboratory for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and energy storage system (ESS) batteries.

“As Taiwan continues to move toward renewable energy solutions, UL Solutions is helping manufacturers navigate this transition with our applied safety science expertise in batteries. Energy storage systems are playing a key role in this shift, elevating the importance of demonstrating ESS battery compliance against the applicable Chinese National Standards,” said Jonathan T.H. Chen, regional vice president, Taiwan, at UL Solutions. “Mirroring demands in the energy market, our Taipei laboratory is empowering manufacturers in Taiwan to be more competitive in Taiwan and internationally and reduce time to market by combining certification testing and global market access testing from UL Solutions.”

This designation comes at a time when Taiwan is undergoing a significant energy transition, aiming to phase out nuclear power by 2025. Global energy storage installations are estimated to reach 358 GW/1,028 GWh by 2023. This estimate is more than 20 times the amount seen at the end of 2020.1 Taiwan’s energy storage market is also expected to grow significantly, with a cumulative capacity exceeding 1 GW/3 GWh by 2025 and expected growth to 20 GWh by 2030, with a total storage capacity exceeding $67 million (USD).2

This designation allows the UL Solutions Taipei laboratory to test EV batteries and ESS batteries for compliance with the following Chinese National Standards (CNS):

  • CNS 16160:2021, uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles regarding specific requirements for the electric powertrain.
  • CNS 62619:2020, secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes — safety requirements for secondary lithium cells and batteries for use in industrial applications.
  • CNS 63056:2021, secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes — safety requirements for secondary lithium cells and batteries for use in electrical energy storage systems.
