Functional Safety

Automotive Functional Safety Week

An expert-led training focused on the implementation of safety-critical systems according to ISO 26262 standards.

To implement safety-critical systems successfully and within ISO 26262 standards, different departments must work together properly, even when business priorities and approaches may differ. Throughout this training, learners are guided through an exploration of the individual aspects of functional safety. Each day functions as an independent module, so participants can book topics separately depending on requirements.

The first two days of this training are recommended for those new to the topic of functional safety. The remaining days look at specific aspects in more detail with a focus on the individual stages of product development.

Key Takeaways

Day 1 – An overview of functional safety

A fast-tracked, systematic point of entry to the concepts underlying functional safety according to ISO 26262. Learners review examples, run through exercises, and identify connections and overlaps to understand how tools are implemented in practice.

  • Setting up and working with ISO 26262 and its fundamental requirements.
  • Typical division of tasks between suppliers and other stakeholders.
  • The impacts of ISO 26262 on your own area of responsibility

Day 2 – Managing functional safety

ISO 26262 requires a systematic approach to safeguard the functional safety of electronic components used in vehicles. During day 2. we look at the demands placed on management both on an organizational level and within actual projects.

  • Organizing areas of a business or a project with a bearing on functionally safe product development.
  • The specific requirements laid down under ISO 26262 affecting senior management and other people with managerial responsibility.
  • Typical solutions for management.
  • The tasks of a safety manager.

Day 3 – Concept planning and product development on a system level

  • A day dedicated to the risks associated with electronic products on a vehicle level to introduce required safety mechanisms to hardware and software. This course highlights everything that must be done to deal with vehicle and system safety.
  • Assessment of dangers and risks according to ISO 26262.
  • Definition of safety goals and requirements.
  • The demands placed by safety concepts and different approaches.
  • Verifying implementation of these safety requirements.

Day 4 – Hardware development for safety-relevant systems

The job performed by hardware used in vehicle electronic products is to implement safety mechanisms. ISO 26262 provides a fault model to validate the reliability of hardware.

  • Requirements under Part 5 of ISO 26262 affecting product development at the hardware level.
  • Calculation of hardware architectural metrics.
  • Hardware failure rates.
  • Assessing whether sufficient safety mechanisms are in place.
  • Verifying the implementation of hardware safety requirements.

Day 5 – Software development for safety-relevant systems

ISO 26262 expects specific methods to be used, beyond good software engineering and AUTOMOTIVE SPICE®. This course explains the issues that need to be considered during software development and how to handle these issues in practical terms.

  • Requirements laid down under Part 6 of ISO 26262 affecting software development.
  • Tasks per phase of software development, depending on the ASIL.
  • Verifying the implementation of software safety requirements.

Target Audience

The first two days of this training are recommended for those without systematic overview knowledge of ISO 26262 in safety-related automotive systems development. The remaining days look at specific aspects in more detail with a focus on the individual stages of product development and recommended for those involved in development of safety-related automotive systems.
