With a dedication to fire and building safety, Howard Hopper has more than 30 years of experience with UL Solutions and currently serves as the regulatory services director. Howard is a UL Solutions subject matter expert (SME) for fire and building code compliance in the Codes and Regulatory Services department and handles UL Solutions code development activities.
Career and education
Howard holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Pacific and is a professional engineer in electrical and fire protection engineering. Howard's responsibilities include overseeing the Codes and Regulatory Services department and advancing UL Solutions' code development initiatives to promote public safety in the built environment.
Howard has achieved several significant professional milestones. He was instrumental in pioneering energy storage system installation requirements. He also played a key role in developing a 3D-printed building construction program.
In addition to these groundbreaking initiatives, Howard serves as vice chair of the UL Solutions Fire Council. His leadership in this role further underscores his dedication to making a positive impact on public safety in the built environment.

Howard is an active member of several professional associations, including the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and the National Fire Protection Association.

Throughout his career, Howard has received numerous accolades, including being named a Corporate Fellow of the William Henry Merrill Society, receiving the 2017 Excellence in Fire and Life Safety Award, the Cal-Chiefs Charlie Gray Award and the ICC Affiliate of the Year Award. Howard has shared his expertise through numerous articles published in the Code Authority website and as a presenter of webinars on topics such as "Fire Safety Concepts with Energy Storage Systems."
Interests and personal pursuits
Outside of his professional life, Howard enjoys bicycle riding, traveling and high-country backpacking. He is also passionate about mentoring aspiring candidates for industry leadership roles.
