With a passion for fire and life safety, Bruce E. Johnson brings more than 30 years of experience to his current position as a regulatory services manager at UL Solutions. Bruce is a UL Solutions subject matter expert (SME) for fire, building and life safety codes; fire containment; reaction to fire; fire suppression; fire detection; and hazard mitigation of new and innovative technologies for the built environment.
Career and education
Bruce has worked in various positions at the International Code Council (ICC) supporting government relations and national fire service activities. Before joining the ICC's staff in September 2007, he held the position of fire marshal for the Town of Riverhead (Long Island, N.Y.) from 1998 to 2007. Bruce is also a part-time deputy fire chief instructor for the Suffolk County Fire Academy, a fire science instructor in the Fire Administration and Emergency Management programs at SUNY-Empire State College, and a nationally certified fire instructor. He teaches many of the commercial building and fire code classes offered by the ICC.
Early in his career, he served in various accounting and budgeting positions. Bruce also has extensive experience in budget and financial management, having held positions as a controller and later as a chief financial officer for two private corporations.
Bruce holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern California, a Bachelor of Science in Fire Service Administration from SUNY – Empire State College (N.Y.), and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Dowling College (N.Y.). His specialty areas of study include building and fire code administration and training, government relations, budgeting and finance, and project management.
Involvement in industry associations
Bruce belongs to several associations, including the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), ICC, International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Fire and Life Safety Section (FLSS), New York State Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association (NYSFMIA), and New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC). He served as president of the NYSFMIA in 2007 and was active in code development and adoption in New York and with the ICC, prior to joining ICC staff. He also served as a member of the New York State Building Code Technical Subcommittee and one term on the International Building Code – Fire Safety Code Development Committee and Fire Code Interpretation Committee.

Bruce has also received several certifications and awards, such as the William Henry Merrill Society Distinguished Members of Technical Staff (Class of 2020), UL Mark of Excellence (2023), ICC/IAFC Excellence in Fire Prevention Award (2015).
Bruce has shared his expertise as an author of several articles published on Code Authorities on UL.com and as a presenter of numerous webinars about technical fire code topics and new and innovative technologies.
