Dean oversees cybersecurity services at UL Solutions globally for various sectors, focusing on technical evaluations and technologies through compliance with and enhancement of industry standards, and leading the operational and delivery teams in cybersecurity at UL Solutions. He is responsible for implementing business growth in several industry sectors and required accreditations of the company’s cybersecurity laboratories worldwide. His security expertise encompasses chips and components, IoT devices, medical devices, mobile and cloud, and payment systems. Prior to his current role at UL Solutions, Dean held positions that included chief technology officer and has led technology startups.
Cybersecurity regulation
Through his advocacy for cybersecurity industry standards and best practices, Dean shapes regulations during their development and updates. He also draws on his deep expertise in governance, risk and compliance to align regulatory standards with the technical cybersecurity requirements of connected devices. He leads UL Solutions’ cybersecurity laboratory activities, conducting testing to support compliance with national, regional and global regulations and requirements. Dean chairs the Conformity Assessment of Connected Devices (CACD) Working Group of the Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) Council, an international association representing independent third-party verification companies. In addition, he is active in two TIC Council task forces focused on artificial intelligence (AI).
Cybersecurity innovation
With attention to creating meaningful change, Dean takes a special interest in industry trends and developments related to cybersecurity. Dean is listed as an inventor of record on a patent in biometrics for security-based services and has contributed to other technology patents. He contributes to a number of organizations and working groups globally and is a frequent conference speaker and panel participant. Within the research and development sphere, he drives innovation to improve existing processes, procedures and attack methodologies for cybersecurity.
