As a principal engineer for Energy and Industrial Automation, Scott has global oversight for the technical decisions made in accordance with UL , International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and other applicable standards covering DERs, bidirectional EV charging, power control systems and energy systems. He began working at UL Solutions in 2005 and has served in many roles related to energy systems, including as a global business development manager and technical lead. Scott is a two-time UL Solutions Mark of Excellence Award winner for the Photovoltaic (PV) Module Turn Key Solution program (2009) and the Advanced Inverter Testing and Certification program (2017). The Mark of Excellence is an internal award at UL Solutions that recognizes achievements which exemplify the company’s Core Values and Key Results.
Grid interconnectivity
Scott and his team help promote grid interconnectivity and safety by validating the grid connection compatibility of green technologies according to national and international requirements. While at UL Solutions, he has led more than 75 inverter and distributed generation equipment certifications for a global customer base. Scott also helped expand UL Solutions’ global inverter and EV charging laboratories and train DER engineering staff. As a global business development manager, Scott was responsible for developing UL Solutions’ testing and certification services related to inverters, DERs, energy storage systems (ESS), EV charging systems, microgrids and related technologies. In this role, he helped align UL Solutions’ certification processes with go-to-market timelines to enable safer and more sustainable green technologies to reach the market faster.
Standards development for new and innovative products
Scott works with manufacturers at the product concept stage and throughout development to help them make their energy transition technologies safer, more reliable and more sustainable. As part of this effort, Scott and his team collaborate across UL Research Institutes, UL Standards & Engagement and UL Solutions to update existing standards and write new standards to keep pace with technology. He has authored several updates to DER-related UL Standards and served as a technical lead for many IEC and UL Standards. These include IEC 62109-1 and IEC 62109-2, which cover the safety requirements of power converters for use in PV power systems, with specific requirements for inverters, and UL 62109-1, the Standard for Power Converters for Use in Photovoltaic Power Systems – Part 1: General Requirements. More recently, Scott’s work has focused on UL 1741, the Standard for Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipment for Use with Distributed Energy Resources; UL 3141, the UL LLC Outline of Investigation for Power Control Systems; and UL 9741, the Standard for Electric Vehicle Power Export Equipment (EVPE).
“Technologies that advance the energy transition tend to push the envelope with functionalities that present safety challenges that traditional safety standards haven’t addressed before. At UL Solutions, our work helps enable these new technologies to operate safely and sustainably.” – Scott Picco
