Tony Worthan is an expert in product and building material safety and sustainability, most notably chemical and microbial exposures in nonindustrial indoor environments. His career has focused on the intersection of sustainability and public health, as well as developing methods to minimize the risk of adverse health effects resulting from product usage. His scientific and technical background has furthered the development of multiple UL Solutions testing, inspection and certification programs.
Safer and more sustainable products
Tony leads the UL Solutions global Product Sustainability and Supplier Quality Audits businesses as well as the North American Retail and Consumer Products operations. He has contributed his expertise in chemical emissions from indoor products and materials to the development of a wide range of chemical emissions test methods and risk assessment techniques. His team developed UL GREENGUARD Certification, a program that helps manufacturers demonstrate product sustainability and commitment to increased health through testing and certifying that products have low chemical emissions. Tony has also played a key role in the global expansion of UL Solutions’ indoor environmental quality (IEQ) laboratories.
Healthy buildings
Tony has more than 33 years of experience in studying IEQ and assessing the potential impacts on human health. Over his career, he has led some of the largest IEQ building studies conducted in North America and was a key collaborator in the development of the UL Solutions Verified Healthy Buildings program. This program has verified over 250 million square feet of indoor environments. Tony also led the Design and Implementation team for the UL SPOT product database, which provides architects, designers and consumers with comprehensive access to sustainable products.
“My passion is the intersection of sustainability and public health. If we can reduce the exposure to chemical emissions at the product or building level, we can minimize the risk of adverse health effects to ourselves, our children and our grandchildren. This ultimately leads to a safer, more sustainable world for all of us.” – Tony Worthan
