Buildings are a major contributor to greenhouse gases and global warming. Maryland is combating this air pollution with Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS).
Common BEPS questions
What does this mean for building owners?
Benchmarking
Starting in 2025, owners of covered buildings (typically 35,000 square feet or larger) will need to report energy usage data to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star® Portfolio Manager tool.
Performance standards
By 2040, all covered buildings will be required to achieve net-zero direct greenhouse gas emissions. Interim standards will be phased in starting in 2030.
Why is this important?
Improved air quality
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions helps mitigate climate change and improve air quality
Saves money
Energy-efficient buildings can save money on utility costs and increase property values
Healthier occupants
Improved indoor air quality can lead to better health outcomes for occupants
How can building owners prepare?
Conduct an energy audit
Identify areas for improvement and prioritize energy-saving measures
Upgrade lighting
Switch to energy-efficient LED lighting
Weatherize your building
Improve insulation and air sealing to reduce energy loss
Optimize building systems
Implement advanced control systems to optimize Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting
Electrify your building
Consider switching to electric heating and cooling systems, such as heat pumps and electric water heating
