In July 2023, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) of Australia published a consultation to seek public opinions on scheduling four persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention. The four chemicals, including pentachlorobenzene (PeCB) and three groups of per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) chemicals: perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), will be classified into the schedules of the IChEMS Register.

The IChEMS Online Register was launched in December last year by the DCCEEW. It contains seven schedules of industrial chemicals listed according to their environmental risks. Schedule 1 chemicals have the lowest hazards to the environment, while Schedule 7 chemicals have the most significant risks to the environment. Readers may learn more about the release of IChEMS Register at UL Regulatory Update: Australia Launches IChEMS Online Register.

The four chemicals are proposed as Schedule 7 chemicals which are banned from being imported, exported, manufactured or used within Australia, with some exemptions. Public opinion can be submitted to DCCEEW through their consultation hub at https://consult.dcceew.gov.au/ichems-s17-proposed-decisions by September 1, 2023.
