Australia: New Safety Standard for Infant Sleep Products and Information Standard for Infant Products

Product Safety Australia issued a new safety standard for infant sleep products and a new information standard for infant products.

On July 18, Product Safety Australia issued a new safety standard for infant sleep products and a new information standard for infant products.

• Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard 2024
  • The new mandatory safety standard applies to all infant sleep products, including products such as rockers, bassinets, household cots and folding cots, and incorporates requirements from the repealed mandatory standards for household cots and folding cots. It provides requirements relevant to design, construction and performance including testing requirements for infant sleep products.
• Consumer Goods (Infant Products) Information Standard 2024
  • The mandatory information standard applies to infant sleep products and inclined non-sleep products and requires warnings and safety information to be supplied with the product. This will provide consumers with important messaging on product assembly, product use and specific warnings relevant to the product use.

For infant sleep products that are household cots or folding cots, suppliers can continue to comply with the existing mandatory safety standards for these products or the new safety standard requirements during the transitional period up to 19 January 2026.

From 19 January 2026 suppliers must comply with the new safety standard for infant sleep products and the new information standard for infant products.
