Bisphenol S (BPS) was added to California’s Proposition 65 list of chemicals on December 529, 2023. The 12-month grace period will end on December 29, 2024, requiring the warning for significant exposures to BPS.
On December 29, 2023, Bisphenol S (BPS) was added to California’s Proposition 65 List due to evidence of female reproductive toxicity. Per the regulations, businesses have 12 months to comply with warning requirements. This 12-month grace period will end on December 29, 2024. On and after this date, businesses will be required to apply the warning if products being purchased, used in homes or workplaces or that are released into the environment contain a significant amount of BPS. BPS is used in curing fast-drying epoxy glues and as a corrosion inhibitor and commonly used as a reactant in polymer reactions. It is also used in the leather industry as a component in the production of syntans. Syntans are used on the tanning and dyeing of leather.
As a reminder, the Proposition 65 regulation requires the list to be updated at least once a year. The last update was December 29, 2023; expect to see an updated list on or before this date in 2024.
A complete, updated Proposition 65 chemical list is available on the OEHHA website.
