The International Standardization Organization (ISO) has published ISO 21135:2024 | IULTCS/IUC 442 Chemicals for the leather tanning industry — Determination of the total content of certain bisphenols. This has introduced a new procedure for analyzing certain bisphenols in leather tanning chemicals using liquid chromatography (LC) equipment.

This test method determines the following bisphenols:

  • Bisphenol A;
  • Bisphenol AF;
  • Bisphenol B;
  • Bisphenol F;
  • Bisphenol S

In the leather manufacturing industry, these substances are used to manufacture synthetic tanning agents and can sometimes be left as residues and impurities. Their dangers have been flagged by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and some have been recognized as toxic to reproduction, skin sensitizers, and endocrine disruptors.
