On September 27, the U.S. Congress has introduced H.R.9864 - Keep Food Containers Safe from PFAS Act of 2024.
This bill aims to amend the Section 301 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act by adding a clause to prohibit the introduction or delivery for introduction into interstate commerce of food packaging containing intentionally added PFAS, as well as for other purposes.
The term ‘PFAS’ means a perfluoroalkyl substance or a polyfluoroalkyl substance that is man-made with at least 1 fully fluorinated carbon atom.”
If passed, the introduction of food packaging containing intentionally added PFAS onto the US market will be prohibited from January 1, 2025.
