New Edition and Scope Expansion of the LED Retrofit Standard

As the use of light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, has grown, retrofit kits using LED technology needed broader coverage under established safety standards.

To this effect, on September 8, 2023 , the scope of UL 1598C, the Standard for Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Retrofit Luminaire Conversion Kits, was expanded. The revisions addressed in the second edition of UL 1598C include a scope expansion and a restructuring of requirements. Updates include:

• Scope expansion and restructuring of requirements
• New Annex for LED retrofit kits for low voltage luminaires
• New and revised retrofit kit markings and instructions
• Enhanced delivery of installer information

These scope changes are intended to improve alignment of other UL lighting Standards referenced in the UL 1598C requirements and to generically apply to all LED retrofit kits. The requirements with specific references to UL 1598, the Standard for Luminaires, were moved to the new Annex SC, bringing a cohesive approach to addressing end luminaire-specific requirements. The scope has also been expanded to cover LED retrofit kits that facilitate component replacement and/or upgrade of existing LED luminaires.

The revisions to the Standard clarify the product marking and installation instructions, which are instrumental in assuring appropriate selection and proper installation of these products in the field and are just as critical as the components of the retrofit kit itself.
