The European Commission's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has released its opinion on the use of cyclopentasiloxane (D5) in cosmetic products, concluding that it is safe, except in body lotion and hair styling formulations and in products that can give rise to lung exposure through inhalation, including aerosols, pressurized sprays and powders.
D5 may “contain traces of cyclotetrasiloxane (D4), which is classified in the EU as toxic to reproduction.” Therefore, the committee has recommended that the level of purity of D5 in cosmetics on the market must at least be > 99%.
