India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry published the Footwear made from Leather and other Materials (Quality Control) Order, 2024.

This Quality Control Order (QCO) specifies the Indian standards that certain types of footwear must conform to. It also requires such footwear to bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Mark once conformity with the corresponding standards has been assessed and certified.

The following table lists the covered products and the applicable standards:

This QCO came into force on Aug. 1, 2024. However, in an amendment to the QCO published on Aug. 30, 2024, the Ministry declared that any footwear covered by the QCO that was placed on the market prior to August 1, 2024, that does not comply with the standards and does not bear the BIS Mark may be sold in India until July 31, 2026.
