The EU CEN approved the updated version of EN 71-3:2019, Safety of toys – Part 3: Migration of certain elements.

The updates concern adjustments to the wording and referenced content, as well as modifications to certain sampling and testing methods, as of December 4, 2024:

  • The updated standard removes the dewaxing step in the pre-treatment process.
  • Updates and revisions have been made to the testing methods for composite materials.
  • Migration testing methods for Category I and Category II materials have been improved.
  • The standard provides a clearer explanation of the rationale for calculating migration limits for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) based on total chromium migration, enhancing both scientific validity and practicality. This document specifies requirements and test methods for the migration of aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barium, boron, cadmium, Chromium(III), Chromium(VI), cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, strontium, tin, organic tin and zinc from toy materials and from parts of toys.
