UL Announces New Specialized Long Term Thermal Aging (LTTA) Polymer Variation Test Method Program

September 9, 2013

NORTHBROOK, Ill., September 9, 2013 - UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a world leader in advancing safety, announced today the launch of a new program that enables plastics manufacturers to get their materials tested quicker if they use the new Specialized LTTA Polymer Variation Test Method process.

Manufacturers of plastics can now utilize this method when they are addressing changes in compound formulations per UL 746A. Specifically, when they are adding, deleting, replacing or changing the level of ingredients.

The Specialized LTTA Polymer Variation Test method is comprised of a study of analytical and performance data to help identify the chemistry of the compound and its relationship to the degradation mechanisms of the reference material. Through this new methodology the modifications which have been made to the compound can be more easily understood. "Market dynamics are requiring plastics companies to adjust their product portfolios and bring innovations to market quickly," said Todd Denison, Vice President and General Manager of the Chemicals Division.  "Because our partners are expecting faster turnaround, greater flexibility and more value-added services in order to meet their go to market needs, UL is continually working with them to develop and introduce more efficient and leading edge processes."

"This new process allows for plastics manufacturers to reduce their time for testing polymer variations when Long Term Thermal Aging testing is required," said George Fechtmann, Primary Designated Engineer Manager for UL's Chemicals Plastics industry.  "But just as important, it affirms the collaboration we have with compounders who need to get their new formulations to market quicker, while transforming the test method as we know it."
