NORTHBROOK, Ill, May 30, 2014 - UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global safety science leader, recently issued the world's first UL-BR certificate to Samsung Electronics for its new Curved UHD TV.
UL successfully issued the first UL-BR certificate for TV products to Samsung's new Curved Ultra High Definition (UHD) televisions (Model: UN55H8000AGXZD, UN65HU9000GXZD) in cooperation with Samsung. In particular, Samsung and UL have worked closely to help ensure the safety of products for customers in the Brazil market, where the safety certificate for TV is not required by the country. The UL-BR certificate was issued according to the latest version of IEC60065, the international standard for safety of audio, video and similar electronic apparatus.
Since entering the Brazil market in 1999, UL has been proactively participating in the Brazilian government's development of the certification programs required for information technology equipment. In 2003, UL was accredited by INMETRO (National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology), the accreditation body approved by Brazilian government, for many electrical safety certification programs and for full telecommunication scope by Anatel. The recent acquisition of Testtech Laboratórios, an electrical safety and energy efficiency testing laboratory based in Porto Alegre, Brazil allows UL to offer full-service, state-of-the-art appliance, ITE and audio & video testing, certification and follow-up service through a single, trusted source.
"By extending our testing and certification capabilities in Brazil, UL now offers quicker and smoother global market access to our customers, especially those who want to expand into Latin America, one of the fast growing retail markets worldwide," said Rachna Stegall, Director Global Engineering Operations, Consumer Technology Division at UL.
UL's testing and assessment capabilities in Brazil are extensive and include the ability to provide electrical safety testing and certification for dozens of consumer appliance categories. And, as the host country for the upcoming international events such as the World Cup and Olympic Games, Brazil's consumer electronics consumption has high growth potential. With customers like Samsung Electronics, UL is placing greater emphasis on the testing of audio and video equipment in Brazil, as well as helping bridge the gap for consumer electronics manufacturers who wish to explore the Latin America market.
