NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS — July 17, 2023 — UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science, today announced that its E-Mobility and Energy Laboratory in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, has been named a certification body testing laboratory (CBTL) under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) System of Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE) Certification Body (CB) scheme.
With this achievement, the E-Mobility and Energy Laboratory as a CBTL under the IECEE CB scheme will offer a full suite of testing capabilities for batteries and electric vehicle (EV) chargers in Taiwan.
“Battery and EV charging manufacturers increasingly need access to global markets,” said Jonathan T.H. Chen, regional vice president, Taiwan, at UL Solutions. “Now as a CBTL offering testing for batteries and EV chargers in Taiwan to internationally recognized standards, UL Solutions is expanding its testing scope to help manufacturers navigate complexities in their destination market.”
In July 2022, UL Solutions opened its state-of-the-art E-Mobility and Energy Laboratory in Taiwan to help manufacturers reduce testing time and costs and accelerate product launches. The laboratory offers customers a range of electric bike (e-bike) power systems and EV charging power and storage battery capacity testing. The facility addresses the safety requirements of markets globally and is the only laboratory in Taiwan with the capabilities to test EV batteries and e-bike battery systems in one place.
IECEE is a multilateral certification system based on IEC International Standards. The IECEE CB scheme offers the potential of one test based on IEC International Standards to achieve one internationally recognized certification.
As a CBTL under the IECEE CB scheme, UL Solutions offers Global Market Access services for IEC CB test certificates according to IEC International Standards applicable to batteries and EV chargers, including:
-
IEC 61851-1:2017, electric vehicle conductive charging system — part 1: general requirements.
-
IEC 61851-23:2014, electric vehicle conductive charging system — part 23: DC electric vehicle charging station.
-
IEC 61851-24:2014, electric vehicle conductive charging system — part 24: digital communication between a DC EV charging station and an electric vehicle for control of DC charging.
-
IEC 62133-2:2017, secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes — safety requirements for portable sealed secondary cells, and for batteries made from them, for use in portable applications — part 2: lithium systems.
-
IEC 62619:2017, secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes — safety requirements for secondary lithium cells and batteries for use in industrial applications.
-
IEC 62752:2016, in-cable control and protection device for mode 2 charging of electric road vehicles (IC-CPD).
-
IEC 63056:2020, secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes — safety requirements for secondary lithium cells and batteries for use in electrical energy storage systems.
-
IEC 63057:2020, secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes — safety requirements for secondary lithium batteries for use in road vehicles, not for propulsion.
“Electrification is already shaping the future of transportation, not only in Taiwan, but globally,” said Chen. “Achieving the CBTL designation empowers UL Solutions to help manufacturers demonstrate critical safety compliance in their battery and EV charging technologies and help enable a more sustainable future.”
