NORTHBROOK, Ill., July 31, 2015 — UL Wire & Cable, a division of UL (Underwriters Laboratories), today announces that it has issued its first Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSHF) certification to Superior Essex for its communication cable type Communications Riser (CMR). The polymeric components of these cables, such as insulation, overall jacket and color concentrate compounds, are evaluated as halogen-free materials, and the finished cables are evaluated to meet the standard of minimal low-level smoke generation under fire conditions.
CMR cable is designed for applications such as in-building riser spaces to prevent fire spreading from floor to floor. The LSHF surface mark of UL for CMR cables certifies that these cables are evaluated to a globally recognized standard, and are fit to use where low smoke and fire safety are critical.
Superior Essex is the first company to offer a third-party certified LSHF designation through UL for these types of cables, in accordance with the latest version of the IEC 62821 -1, -2 & -3 standards. The latest standard consolidates all existing standards and tests for LSHF cables as well as additional requirements. The standard is valid not only for the cable but also for any compounds or materials used in the cable.
"We value transparency and safety in the wire and cable industry," said Steven Galan, director, UL Wire & Cable, "and our testing and certification procedure enables manufacturers, designers and other key stakeholders to substantiate claims through UL’s trusted third-party certification and offer cables compliant to the latest standard for the benefits of their customers."
“After the release of the IEC 62821 standards and in accordance with our transparency policy, it was an obvious step for us to work with UL Wire & Cable to have the first UL CMR-LSHF listing.” said Will Bryan, vice president of Marketing, Superior Essex “Adding the UL LSHF surface mark on our cables help reinforce our industry leadership.”
