UL’s SPOT Sustainable Product Platform Reaches 100,000 Product Families and Adds ENERGY STAR©, Safer Choice Certified Products

October 3, 2018

MARIETTA, GA., October 2, 2018 — UL today announced the addition of ENERGY STAR and Safer Choice Certified products to SPOT, UL’s web-based product sustainability information tool. With these additions, SPOT now features more than 100,000 product families, making it the most comprehensive resource for architects, designers, specifiers and procurement professionals to find sustainable products.

As the largest credible online resource for sustainable product information, SPOT features a broad array of product categories to simplify the selection and specification process for sustainable products. The addition of ENERGY STAR products enables purchasers to choose from more than 40,000 energy efficient products including computer equipment, power supplies, light bulbs and fixtures. Additional product categories will be added over time. Safer Choice certified products, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) label for safer chemical-based products, are now in SPOT to give users access to more than 2,250 certified cleaning, personal care and sanitation products, expanding the already extensive list of cleaning items.

“SPOT is quickly becoming a trusted source of sustainable product information for professional purchasers, architects, designers and other users,” said Alberto Uggetti, vice president and general manager of UL’s Environment division. “The addition of ENERGY STAR and Safer Choice Certified products to SPOT is yet another milestone in our goal to create an indispensable online source for products that fulfill green building and purchasing requirements. By adding products from these programs we provide large purchasing groups, such as the General Services Administration and the Department of Defense, a comprehensive, easy way to find products that meet their sustainability requirements.”

Selection of sustainable products can contribute to earning credits toward green building certification programs including LEED, BREEAM and Fitwel. In addition, SPOT helps procurement officials easily identify products that comply with the EPA’s recommendations on purchasing environmentally preferable products. The EPA’s Recommendations for Specifications, Standards and Ecolabels for Federal Purchasing advise that products undergo independent environmental performance verification and gives preference to those that evaluate multi-attribute standards. Certification programs like GREENGUARD, ENERGY STAR, and Cradle to Cradle Products Certified™ are just some of the third-party labels recommended by the EPA, all of which are included in the SPOT database.

The General Services Administration now links to SPOT on sftool.gov to help purchasers support responsible supply chains, and the Department of Defense’s Sustainable Procurement Program has also recognized SPOT as a source for products.

SPOT database is powered by UL, a leading safety science company and developer of globally-recognized sustainability standards with a 120+ year history.
