The IECEE (IEC System of Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components) Certification Management Committee unanimously approved appointment of Steven Margis, director of conformity assessment programs at UL, as IECEE chair for a three-year term of office beginning Jan. 1, 2022. He becomes the first IECEE chair from UL in the company’s more than 125-year history. Additionally, Margis will serve as chair elect in 2021, supporting current IECEE Chair Wolfgang Niedziella.
Margis, who currently serves as the IECEE vice chair, has been an active contributor to the field of global conformity assessment related to the development and operation of market relevant conformity assessment schemes for more than 30 years.
The IECEE is a multilateral certification system based on International Standards prepared by the IEC, the International Electrotechnical Commission. Representing 54 countries and nearly 650 global conformity assessment bodies, its members use the principle of mutual recognition of test results to obtain certification or approval at national levels around the world. Annually over 110,000 certificates are issued to facilitate trade for the electrotechnical industry in accessing global markets.
Throughout his career, Margis has focused on strategy, policy, business development and innovation related to global conformity assessment. These contributions have led to his recognition as a recipient of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Gerald H. Ritterbusch Conformity Assessment Medal and the IEC 1906 Award, and designation as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff of UL’s William Henry Merrill Society.
