Enhancing Aviation GSE Safety with Lithium Batteries

In an effort to meet evolving requirements to reduce carbon emissions and other environmental impacts, airlines and airports are replacing their diesel-fueled ground support equipment (GSE) with lithium-ion battery-powered machines. The transition away from the use of diesel-fueled equipment not only reduces carbon emissions; it also helps minimize fueling and engine maintenance costs as well as ground personnel health risks associated with the emissions and noise of internal combustion engines.

UL Solutions lithium-battery GSE testing and certification

Although lithium-ion battery-powered GSE offers many benefits, it also introduces a significant risk of fire, electric shock and explosion. To help mitigate these safety risks, UL Solutions offers testing and certification to UL 5840, the Standard for Electrical Systems of Battery Powered Aviation Ground Support Equipment, which is recognized and approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). The Standard also covers lead-acid battery-powered GSE that must be retrofitted to lithium-ion battery power.
