Watch now: NFPA 1970 Spotlight Series, Part 5: Particulate Blocking
Welcome to the UL Solutions spotlight series, where we highlight the critical changes in NFPA 1970. Learn from UL Solutions Expert Kristen Trawinski as she examines the Revised Requirements for Particulate Blocking in Structural Firefighting Hoods, an essential update for enhanced firefighter safety.
Particulate Blocking: Now Mandatory
Previously optional under NFPA 1971-2018, particulate blocking is now mandatory for all structural firefighting hoods under NFPA 1970. This new standard includes specific design requirements for the hood's face opening and hem for greater protection against particulate exposure.
In addition, the particulate blocking requirement applies not only to the composites but also to the seams of the entire hood, as outlined in Clauses 8.14.1 and 9.4.4. The new standard also introduces an air permeability threshold: If the material’s air permeability is below 0.28 cm³/s/cm², the particulate blocking test may be waived.
