NOTE 1: This column provides the date associated with the Implementation Date. The Implementation date is the date by which all new product designs and revised constructions of currently certified products will be evaluated in accordance with the new/revised requirements, during future certification submittals. So, for example, a new polisher that is submitted after November 30, 2018 will be required to comply with UL 62841-2-4. Otherwise, the polisher can be submitted to UL 60745-2-4 prior to that date and remain certified under that standard unless the manufacturer makes a major modification to the tool. A tool that is modified by a single change such that the heating, impact and abnormal test(s) must all be performed is considered to be a modified product.

NOTE 2: This column specifies the Effective Date for cordless tools with lithium-ion systems. All lithium-ion tools are required to comply with the new requirements for a lithium-ion system by the specified effective date. As noted before, the addition of lithium-ion requirements are new requirements and the tool, battery pack and charger are evaluated as a complete system. This is one of the most significant changes to the standard and it is important for manufactures to contact UL so that you can begin the process of having your lithium-ion battery system evaluated to the new requirements.

NOTE 3: This column provides guidance with respect to those standards that are under the Certification Requirement Change process. Under the Continuing Certification Program, products certified prior to the new edition of UL 62841 USA Effective Date can remain certified to the respective UL 60745-part 2 standard indefinitely, so long as no changes are made to the product and a no “Action is Required” vote by the STP dictates otherwise.  For battery tools, lithium-ion based systems, (i.e. the battery system and the battery charger) will always need to meet requirements of UL 62841-1 Annex K after the new edition of UL 62841 Part 2 or 4 Effective Date.

APPLICATION NOTES:

UL 2595 2nd Edition contains identical requirements for batteries and charging systems as UL/IEC 62841-1 Annex K.  The general requirements in this standard are used in conjunction with UL appliance standards to evaluate a variety of end products, including stationary and transportable tools and garden appliances.

UL 60335-2-29 1st Edition covers battery chargers.  These battery chargers may then be additionally evaluated in combination with batteries in a charging system under UL/IEC 62841-1 Annex K, UL 2595 2nd Edition and/or IEC 63370 1st Edition.

IEC 63370 1st Edition contains a subset of requirements from IEC 62841-1:2014 that are applicable for battery charging systems. The battery charging system includes the battery(ies) and its related charging circuitry. In many cases, the same battery charging system is utilized for a wide variety of end products. Therefore, the purpose of this document is to provide a means for evaluating a battery charging system for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools and lawn and garden machinery. This evaluation can then be utilized over a wide range of products covered by IEC 62841 (all parts), without having to re-evaluate the battery charging system for each case where the battery charging system is utilized in or with a product.

Batteries and charging systems evaluated to the requirements of UL 62841-1 1st Edition Annex K and/or UL 2595 2nd Edition may be separately certified by UL for use in electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools and lawn and garden machinery, and appliances.  The evaluation may use a CB Scheme Test Report and Test Certificate based on IEC 63370 1st Edition.

• Lithium-Ion Battery Packs may be separately certified under CCN BBOI.
• Battery Charger Units may be separately certified under CCN BBON.
