UL Solutions' property risk testing capabilities
When insurance companies underwrite risks for stored commodities, they depend on precise tests that evaluate whether sprinkler systems will control or suppress specific fire challenges.
UL Solutions showcases fire risk testing
See fire scenarios that showcase our ability to conduct a comprehensive portfolio of fire risk testing from large warehouse settings to smaller applications. These evaluations provide our customers with a precise understanding of property risks as well as identify opportunities to minimize losses and reduce the consequences of fire.
Through our comprehensive testing capabilities, we can evaluate various product packaging and storage techniques in commercial and industrial buildings so that you can gain a precise understanding of property risks and identify opportunities to minimize losses and reduce the consequences of a fire.
Our large-scale test facilities feature three lab spaces that can simulate a wide range of fire-related scenarios. You are welcome to view tests from a temperature controlled observation room with large viewing windows and monitors displaying sprinkler temperatures and operation times, along with infrared temperature profiles and images. If you would like to view the tests remotely, video streaming is available.
By simulating specific fire safety challenges and collecting data, we can provide you with valuable information that enables you to manage risks more effectively and make more informed business decisions about your property.
Commodity classification testing
We test the combustion characteristics of a broad range of commodities in various packaging configurations and assign a commodity hazard classification referenced in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 13, the Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. Tests are conducted under a specialized calorimeter hood that collects burning gases during flaming combustion. As a part of commodity classification testing, we examine many factors including sprinkler activation temperature, sprinkler response time index (RTI), the radial distance from the sprinkler to the center of the fire, the distance between the ceiling and the top of the commodity, and the number of storage tiers. Our detailed reports give insurers all the information they need to assess risk comprehensively and accurately.
We also provide certification and testing for storage pallets and intermediate bulk containers.
Benefits of property risk analysis
Increasingly sophisticated tools and methodologies are required to assess and mitigate the risks of commercial and industrial building structures and new product packaging and storage techniques. We have the resources to utilize existing test methods or create customized test procedures to evaluate a wide variety of products and protection scenarios. These assessments, which range from testing unique products to new storage techniques, identify special hazards associated with unusual or challenging environments. Our team of experts is trained to advise on possible solutions and provide clear documentation and reporting to help you mitigate identified risks.
By leveraging our ability to conduct large-scale warehouse simulation fire tests, we can create customized solutions to help you demonstrate performance acceptance in situations not covered by current fire codes. By working with us, you’ll be able to present a performance-based fire test report to authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), insurers and building owners to demonstrate compliance with the applicable installation and design codes.
