Immersion Cooling Fluids Testing and Certification

We evaluate and certify the performance properties of immersion cooling fluids through a series of industry-recognized test methods and analytical tests.

Immersion cooling of server and computing components in a data center.

Immersion cooling is a method of cooling hardware by immersing it in an electrically nonconductive fluid that is an excellent conductor of heat so that electronic components remain cool during operation. Although this technology has been used to cool high-voltage transformers since the 1940s, the recent increase in high-powered data centers for applications such as artificial intelligence (AI), cryptocurrency mining and electric vehicle (EV) charging has sparked rapid growth for the immersion cooling industry.

Certify your immersion cooling fluid for use with information and communication technology equipment

Our certification program for immersion cooling fluids evaluates to the requirements of UL 2417, Outline of Investigation for Immersion Cooling Fluids for Use with Information and Communication Technology Equipment. As a critical component in the complete immersion cooling system, it is crucial that these fluids are assessed for autoignition temperature, flash point, and dielectric breakdown voltage. Additional characterization tests are also included in the outline to assist end users with fluid selection. UL 2417 helps make it easy to demonstrate compliance with fluid safety requirements found in CSA/IEC/UL 62368-1, the Standard for Safety of Audio/Video, Information and Communication Technology Equipment - Part 1: Safety Requirements.

Immersion cooling fluids that are found to comply with UL 2417 requirements can display the UL certification Mark and are published in the UL Product iQ® database under the Category Code Number (CCN): NCOZ. This enables cooling systems manufacturers to pre-select fluids to meet their needs and helps reduce time to market when certifying their systems.

Testing of immersion cooling fluid performance with UL Solutions

UL Solutions additionally offers third-party testing for immersion cooling fluids to evaluate performance properties through a series of industry-recognized test methods and analytical tests. We provide customized performance testing of immersion cooling fluids based on customer needs for specific end-product applications.

We can help evaluate your immersion cooling fluids' critical attributes, including auto-ignition temperature, flash point and viscosity. After testing, we issue a letter, report and datasheet that document the results.

The most common attributes and testing methods include:

  • Autoignition temperature (AIT) per ASTM E659-15
  • Flash point testing per ASTM D93 (Pensky-Martens closed cup method)
  • Flash/fire point testing per ASTM D92 (Cleveland open cup method)
  • Dielectric strength per IEC 60156
  • Dielectric breakdown per ASTM D1816

Why choose UL Solutions for immersion cooling fluid testing?

As a leading global third-party certification and testing provider, UL Solutions stands committed to advancing immersion cooling fluid testing to relevant safety and performance standards. Our experts use internationally accepted test methods established by ASTM International and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to evaluate immersion cooling fluids. We also offer comprehensive certification services for fluids under UL 2417.
