Overview of UL 991/UL 1998/IEC 60730-1 Annex H training
This online, on-demand training course will provide you with in-depth exposure to industrial functional safety standards for electronic controls. Three standards will be addressed:
- UL 991: Standard for Safety Tests for Safety-Related Controls Employing Solid-State Devices
- UL 1998: Standard for Safety Software in Programmable Components
- IEC/UL 60730-1 Annex H: Standard for Safety Automatic and Electrical Controls
This course teaches how to effectively use the standards in a product’s design phase, which is critical to its certification and acceptance. During the course, the concepts covered by the standards will be applied to a cross-industry technology topic, demonstrating that different standards used in different industries use different metrics for assessing and testing functional safety.

Why should I take UL 991/UL 1998/IEC 60730-1 Annex H Training?
UL 991/UL 1998 enables the use of safety-related functionality in the use of software and electronics. When pursuing a UL Mark, if your product has electronics and software, you will likely need to comply with UL 991/UL 1998. Many manufacturers may have some exposure to functional safety in other domains but have not had to comply with UL 991/UL 1998.
This course is designed for those who are involved in implementing an automatic protective safety-related system or engaged in the development of safety-related products for use in a product intended for the UL Mark. The course focuses on understanding safety-related software and electronic development for active protective controls. This course will discuss how these functional safety standards apply techniques to detect single points of failure and mitigate the risk associated with them.
Who should take UL 991/1998/IEC 60730-1 Annex H training?
This training class is designed for:
- Design and development engineers who are implementing safety-related systems.
- Hardware and software engineers who are implementing protection safety elements for their safety equipment.
- Project managers of safety-related systems.
- Managers who are interested in demonstrating compliance for the UL Mark for safety-related software and electronics.
Optional UL Certified Functional Safety Professional (UL-CFSP) Exam
Participants who complete the training are eligible to take a two-hour certification exam. Those who pass the exam are individually certified as a UL Certified Functional Safety Professional in UL 991/UL 1998/IEC 60730-1 Annex H or UL-CFSP. Results are provided immediately.
