What’s the state of decarbonized transportation?
In 2023, the IEA issued a scathing report (“Tracking Clean Energy Progress”) that noted a decided lack of progress toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.
Some key points:
- Passenger and cargo transport rebounded after the first two years of the COVID crisis, leading to a 3% increase in GHG emissions.
- Between 1990 and 2022, emissions from transportation grew at a rate faster than any other sector except for industry.
- 91% of the fuel used by the transportation sector comes from oil products, a reduction of a measly 3.5% since the ‘70s — more than 50 years ago!
