UL, a global safety science leader, announced that its offices in Taiwan have successfully completed the first Thread certification testing in Asia for Samsung Electronics’ System LSI Business.
Thread is a secure and low-power wireless networking protocol for Internet of Things (IoT) devices in smart homes and commercial buildings. UL in Taiwan is the first test laboratory authorized by the Thread Group to validate security, interoperability and conformance for Thread-enabled products in Asia.
The module board, Samsung’s Exynos i T100, is the first component to be Thread-certified by Asian ATL, as well as the first module board from Samsung to obtain Thread certification. The Exynos i T100 is an IoT connectivity solution for short-range communication that supports major protocols including Bluetooth 5, Zigbee 3.0 and Thread. It is a critical component for IoT solutions.
Barry Yu, UL’s vice president and Asia Pacific General Manager of the Consumer Technology Division, said, "The networking protocol plays an important role helping ensure IoT device interoperability and a positive user experience. The UL laboratory in Taiwan is the first testing laboratory authorized to conduct Thread certification testing in Asia. With hand-on experience, UL will help the manufacturers to speed up the interoperability testing and certification."
Thread addresses the unique interoperability, security, power and architecture challenges facing IoT in the home and commercial environments. It is an IPv6-based low-power wireless mesh networking protocol that allows secure connectivity from edge devices to the cloud and to each other. Thread has been successfully adopted across smart home and commercial applications, such as smart offices and smart buildings, and is one of the most promising technical building blocks to enable connectivity between IoT devices, mobile devices, and the internet.
The Exynos i T100 built on 28nm process also delivers class-leading performance and strong security through an integrated processor with memory and advanced security features respectively. SamT Thread Stack, which is based on the OpenThread stack, enhances the connectivity of T100.
Benefiting from the trends of 5G, the development of IoT products continues to increase its growth. According to Statista, the global IoT market reached about $164 billion (USD) in 2018. By 2025, the market is projected to grow nearly tenfold and is expected to reach around $1.6 trillion (USD).
UL supports the development of the IoT ecosystem and provides testing and certification programs of wireless protocols such as Bluetooth SIG, OCF, Quick Charge Wireless Power, Qi and Zigbee. By assisting the manufacturers, UL supports the future development of IoT. For more information on UL’s services, please visit our Consumer Technology website.
