Watch now: NFPA 1970 Spotlight Series, Part 3: Outer Shell Impact – Flame after Fuel Exposure and Cleaning
Learn from UL Solutions expert Jessica Andrews as she shares specifics on the critical updates to NFPA 1970 standards for firefighting personal protective equipment (PPE).
Outer Shell Impact: Enhanced Testing and Material Resilience
The standard introduces rigorous new tests for outer shell fabrics used in structural and proximity firefighting. The revised tear resistance test now includes a multi-environmental conditioning procedure with 20 laundering cycles, heat exposure and flexing. Additionally, a new test for flame resistance following exposure to diesel fuel ensures that outer shells maintain their protective qualities even after contamination and cleaning.
