Overview

Advanced testing laboratories and certification services for household/beauty salon applications

UL Solutions offers a comprehensive certification program for home beauty products. We can meet your testing and certification needs for both household and medical standards at the same time.

IEC 60335-2-113 (household) and IEC 60601-2-83 (medical) cover products such as:

  • Appliances for controlling hair growth
  • Appliances for skin and beauty care

These products use one of the following technologies:

  • Intense light sources (ILS) – A device that emits high-intensity light sources that make use of pulsed or continuous high-output waveforms to produce a broad wavelength output of noncoherent light, usually in the 500 to 1200 nm range
  • Lasers – A device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation

Our experts can help you improve your products’ speed to market.

Appliances for controlling hair growth (IEC 60335-2-113)

This international standard deals with the safety of beauty care appliances incorporating lasers or intense light sources for household and similar purposes where their operation relies on contact with the skin, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V.

The standard also covers appliances not intended for normal household use, but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used in beauty salons and similar premises.

  • Appliances for controlling hair growth
  • Appliances for skin and beauty care incorporating lasers or ILS

Home light therapy equipment (IEC 60601-2-83)

This part of IEC 60601 provides safety requirements for home light therapy equipment. This equipment is intended to be used in home healthcare environments and is typically used by lay operators who are familiar with the environment and the specific characteristics of such lamps.

Home light therapy equipment provides light therapy utilizing eye-mediated photobiological effects, which can be visual or non-visual, and skin-mediated photobiological effects (non-visual only). Possible applications include pain relief, psoriasis treatment and treatment of winter depression, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

IEC 60601-2-83 was developed because IEC 60601-2-57 only covers light-source equipment providing light therapy through non-visual photobiological effects, which excludes an important group of light-source equipment that creates visual photobiological effects. IEC 60335-2-113 provides those specific requirements for household appliances with light sources for cosmetic and beauty care but does not apply to equipment with medical purposes. IEC 60601-2-83 addresses all safety requirements for home light therapy equipment.

Assorted laser products

IEC 60601-2-22 is an international standard that addresses the basic safety and essential performance of laser equipment used for surgical, therapeutic, medical diagnostic, cosmetic or veterinary applications.

How can UL Solutions help?

For household and beauty salon applications, we offer services to get access to all the markets that participate in the certified body (CB) scheme via compliance with IEC 60335-2-113, and to the North American market via compliance with UL 60335-2-113, the Standard for Cosmetic and Beauty Care Appliances Incorporating Lasers and Intense Light Sources.

Additionally, we offer services to get access to all the markets that participate in the CB scheme via compliance with IEC/EN60601-2-83 for devices designed for medical applications.

UL Solutions can provide a unique service combining certification programs issuing certificates according to IEC60335-2-113 and IEC60601-2-83. According to the European Commission, “EU rules on medical devices also cover products without an intended medical purpose — for example, laser or intense pulsed light devices for hair removal or skin treatment, liposuction equipment and brain stimulation devices (see Annex XVI to Regulation (EU) 2017/745 for a full list).” This means that for the European market, EN 60601-2-83 applies to such devices.
