Overview of wireless testing
What is wireless device testing?
Wireless testing assesses the real-life performance and functionality of products incorporating wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, WiFi and cellular connectivity.
Why is wireless testing important to your business?
Launching a wireless product to the global market can be a complicated, costly and time-consuming process. Platform technologies including Bluetooth, WiFi, Thread, Zigbee, cellular from 2G to 5G and the products they enable need to function as promised while meeting complex market demands and requirements.
Regulatory requirements for wireless technology
Some requirements, such as electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), radio frequency (RF), specific absorption rate (SAR)/RF exposure and safety, are designed to prevent products from interfering with other devices, cause fires or potentially causing health problems. These requirements are mandatory in most markets; however, there is no universal standard, and regulations vary from country to country. Making matters worse, regulations are continually evolving to keep pace with rapid advances in technology, making it challenging to stay on top of the regulatory landscape.
To place a product on the market in the European Union (EU), manufacturers, distributors and importers are required to ensure that their electrical/electronic products with radio transmitters and/or receivers comply with the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU. Bluetooth, Zigbee, Wi-Fi and other 2.4GHz products sold in the EU typically apply the harmonized standard EN 300 328 to establish a “presumption of conformity” with the related radio spectrum requirements of the Directive; however to do so they must be using the latest version of the standard, EN 300 328 V2.2.2. Use of any other version of the standard, or use of other standards, will almost always require a Type Examination by a Notified Body before compliance with the Directive can be declared.
